Driveshafts removal & replacement / Antriebswellen ausbauen
Hello everyone!
This is my first posting to the forum. I just joined because I have recently acquired a 1975 Ro80. The outer boots on the driveshafts are totally shredded and need to be replaced before driving the car further. I have read through the shop manual and it sounds straightforward - 1. Remove the hub nuts, 2. Remove the steering arms from the axle housing, 3. Remove the lower guide arm from the axle housing, 4. Disconnect the axle shaft from the inboard brake and move the axle housing far enough out to extract the axle splines. Sounds simple but I am nervous about the spring tension suddenly releasing as I disconnect the steering and suspension parts from the axle housing. I currently have the wheels off and the suspension at full droop.
Has anyone done this repair, and if yes, do you have any cautions or recommendations about how to do this safely? I’d like to avoid injuring myself or the car!
Thanks in advance for any guidance.
Ilya

Hallo zusammen!

Sometimes it is really hard to remove the hub nuts. 46mm
Then someone has to apply the brakes to hold against the torque.

... and this 46-mm socket requires a tightening torque of 400 Nm!
Good luck, Urs

Ah, good call. I have the car up in the air with wheels off. Once I deal with the outer boots and get the hub nuts back on, I will torque them down with the wheels on the ground. I bought an absolutely huge 3/4” drive torque wrench that should do the job.

Welcome to the club, Ilya!
That’s not a problem, as long as you don’t loosen the nut on the strut's upper mount (the shock absorber piston).
You can indeed disassemble it exactly as described. When the suspension is fully extended, it is not under spring tension.
